Is there an organization that helps districts do a better job of purchasing technology?

TLA Recommendations
The Technology for Education Consortium (TEC) is a non-profit focused on bringing transparency, efficiency, and collaboration to K-12 schools engaged in evaluating and purchasing Edtech products and services. The TEC is currently focused on collecting and analyzing device purchasing data from districts nationwide to provide specific advice for participating districts, as well as general advice for all K-12 EdTech device purchasers. The organization is also currently building out its membership of districts, through which they will grow their support offerings beyond device pricing.

What are the key issues I should think about when buying edtech devices?

TLA Recommendations
While purchasing devices is rarely pain-free, adding structure to the purchasing process and understanding which cost-levers to pull can help make purchasing easier.
RESOURCE

How should I think about the key trade-offs among devices?

TLA Recommendations
Understanding key points about what devices can and can't do, and how they fit within the context of the district's approach, will lead to a better device decision and save time.
RESOURCE

Should chromebooks be considered as the primary device for our blended learning work?

TLA Recommendations
Devices are essential to blended learning, but the make and model has little to no effect on learning outcomes. As such, districts should start the device conversation with the lowest cost devices that will work within their IT structure and justify any additional costs. So long as schools and districts meet the minimum Internet requirements, chromebooks should be considered as one of the low-cost options.
RESOURCE

What role should EdTech devices play as we implement our blended learning instruction?

TLA Recommendations
Though devices are a crucial part of many blended instructional practices, devices alone will not improve student learning. When purchasing or rolling out a device, consider what types of instructional practices these devices are meant to enable.
